The company has committed to measures aimed at balancing the application, both for drivers and passengers
The 99 announced today that it will expand the earnings of drivers from 10% to 25%, after tests with higher amounts paid to drivers in 20 regions in recent weeks. Now, the new payment policy applies to all 1,600 cities where the app currently operates its urban transport service.
According to 99, the measure aims to improve drivers’ earnings and also reduce the negative impact of the increase in fuel prices in Brazil this year. The company also informs that the novelty “takes into account the maintenance of the platform’s balance”.
Despite the increase in earnings, prices for passengers are unlikely to rise, as the company is committed to subsidizing “the bulk” of this increase in drivers’ earnings.
The adjustment in payments is not a promotion and applies to the application’s categories called 99Pop, 99Comfort, 99Poupa, 99Shares, and 99Entrega.
99 also introduced discount programs at gas stations along with the Shell Box mobile app and the Mais Ganhos 99 program, which has financial incentives for drivers.
Read below the interview between EXAME and Livia Pozzi, 99’s director of operations and products, about the new readjustments for drivers.
What led to increased pay for drivers?
Our drivers are our partners. We are following fuel increases very closely, and listening to their needs. Since the beginning of the year, we are promoting initiatives to offer more savings to those who drive through our platform. For example, we increased the fuel discount to 10% in partnership with Shell, which represented savings of more than R$5 million; we also developed fare exemption actions in some races that have already resulted in extra gains of more than R$10 million; in addition to other financial incentive programs and frequent review of our policies.
We reached a point where successive readjustments in the value of fuel had a very negative effect on the earnings of partner drivers. Therefore, in view of this difficult macroeconomic scenario, we decided to increase drivers’ earnings by 10% to 25%. We also understand that this increase would be necessary throughout Brazil, to enable improvements for all drivers who are partners of 99.
Our objective is, therefore, to continue positively impacting the Brazilian economy and society.
How will the price of races, for passengers, be affected in the coming months?
Our commitment at 99 is with the entire Brazilian society, partner drivers, and passengers. We cannot help but look at the people who need the service, especially at a time when we are still facing a pandemic. Therefore, we are going to subsidize most of this increase in earnings for partner drivers. Shorter runs may be minimally readjusted for passengers in the coming months. Our mission is to remain an affordable option for people who need to get around and, therefore, we will maintain the values of longer runs without adjustment.
Could you give an example for each payment situation: 10% and 25% increase in earnings?
The 99 driver-partner has transparent access to the details of their earnings after each race within the app itself. The 99 is the only one with clear tables, by city, so drivers can compare and be sure they’ve received their readjustments. Most of the adjustments to our partner drivers’ earnings occurred in terms of mileage and minimum fare, which vary by city. For example, a driver in São Luís do Maranhão received around R$18 in a 13 km run before the adjustment and now receives around R$21, this without dynamic fare; in Belo Horizonte, a race of 10 minutes or 5 km previously yielded around R$9 to the driver and, today, around R$10 reais. I invite all our partner drivers to check the tables and raises.
How was the increase in payments received in the places that received the news first?
We initially increased earnings for our partner drivers in 20 metropolitan regions. The reception was very positive and it is even one of the reasons for the expansion to the whole of Brazil in just two weeks.
Do higher payments for drivers tend to increase the volume transacted on Account99?
There is, however, a proportional trend towards an increase in the volume traded. 99Pay is the digital wallet used by passengers.
